‘Starting the New Year with a bang’: SUV crashes into Houston boba shop moments before opening

HOUSTON, Texas – As businesses prepared to open their doors Tuesday morning, Boba Bird was ready to welcome a steady flow of eager customers. Instead, something much larger came crashing in—literally.

At 9:54 a.m., just a minute before they unlock their door to open for business, a terrifying moment unfolded when an SUV crashed into the boba shop located at 10304 Blackhawk Boulevard, southeast of Hobby Airport.

Surveillance footage captured the dramatic incident from multiple angles:

  • The SUV crashes into the boba station, and employees are seen emerging from the area shortly after the impact.
  • SUV plowing through the Boba Shop leaves significant damage to the office and break room.

Boba Bird’s employees and bystanders quickly rushed to assist the couple inside the vehicle, an older man and woman.

The older man and woman were visibly “shaken up”, said Peter Phan the owner of Boba Bird. Fortunately, they escaped without injuries.

Boba Bird wasn’t just a business for Peter—it was the realization of a dream he had nurtured since his teenage years. After years of hard work and saving, he proudly opened the shop just over a year ago.

Peter created Boba Bird with a strong sense of community at its heart. “I built this little spot next to [J. Frank] Dobie High School…so the kids can come by to hang out,” he said.

Now, in a matter of seconds, that dream has been turned upside down.

“It’s super devastating,” Peter said, reflecting on the damage caused by the crash. “This sucks, seeing this sucks. This is a major headache.”

  • Peter also walked us through the aftermath, showing the extensive damage caused by the crash.

“I’m just hoping insurance takes care of everything or enough where I can rebuild,” he added.

Despite the challenges, Peter remains optimistic about the future. “Have to hold [my] head high in times like this. I can’t spend time moping, especially…[when] I have all my employees looking up to me.”

Peter also shared his heartfelt reaction with customers in a social media post:

“Starting off the new year with a bang! In all seriousness…we are so glad that no employees were injured this morning and so thankful for the outpouring love and support we’ve received from the community already. We will be closed while we sort this out and start cleaning up.”

The Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office responded to the scene, and the SUV was towed away shortly after. The owner stated that the couple was driven home by relatives.

Loyal customers have already started flooding Boba Bird’s social media pages with words of encouragement and support.

Many have expressed their relief that no one was seriously hurt and their eagerness for the shop to reopen.

Peter, in turn, is grateful for the community’s love. “I’ll be happy,” he said, “If everyone just comes back to eat and grab a drink.”

No timeline has been provided yet for when Boba Bird will resume operations.

Despite the setbacks, Peter remains hopeful about the future. “We’ll get through this,” he said. “Boba Bird is the word….We’ll be back.”

We will continue to follow the story of the Boba Bird crash and provide updates as more details become available.
