Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a drive-by shooting that occurred Wednesday evening in the 500 block of W. Houston in the Highlands area of east Harris County.

According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the shooting left two adults injured—a man and a woman—who were airlifted to the hospital for treatment. The man, who was inside a vehicle at the time of the shooting, is reportedly in critical condition. The woman, who was struck by a bullet as she stood in the front doorway of a nearby home was also taken to the hospital.
Two children, a 5-year-old and a 7-year-old, were also inside the home but were not injured in the incident. Authorities noted that a school bus was in the vicinity dropping off students at the time of the shooting, but no injuries to students were reported.

Preliminary investigations indicate the suspect or suspects, armed with an assault rifle, opened fire before fleeing the scene in a black-colored vehicle. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
The sheriff’s office says earlier in the day, a vehicle parked in front of the home had been intentionally set on fire. The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to that arson incident.
