Fire crews from the Webster, Nassau Bay, Friendswood, League City, Seabrook, Dickinson, Houston and Forest Bend fire departments contained the fire to one building.

“When we arrived, the fire was well involved in multiple units already and it had already spread into the attic, so it had been burning for quite a bit before we arrived,” said Battalion Chief Anthony Pearson with the Webster Fire Department.

Firefighters contained the fire nearly two hours later.

Edith Williams lived in one of eight apartments that were destroyed.

“My son came out of the other room, and he looked over where the water heater is and he said, ‘Mama, it’s a fire right here,’” said Williams. “We was trying to grab whatever we could, like me, I had to grab a blanket because of course, I’m in my night clothes.”

Williams, who celebrated her 67th birthday on Wednesday, said she moved into her apartment three months ago.

The Webster Fire Marshal was investigating the cause of the fire.

No one was injured.

A mayday call was issued when a firefighter got lost in a smoke-filled apartment during the primary search for residents on the first floor. Pearson said it was quickly resolved and the firefighter was brought to safety.
