Iowa Colony – Making history and a movement!
On Saturday, Iowa Colony proudly hosted its first-ever Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, marking a historic moment for the town and bringing the community together in celebration.
KPRC 2’s Content Gatherer Zorrie Jones was able to capture the event as a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and it truly lived up to its promise of bringing people together in unity and joy.
A Parade Full of Life and Excitement
The parade kicked off at 10:00 a.m., with a wave of excitement rippling through the crowd. Residents lined the streets to watch colorful Slingshots glide by, marching bands fill the air with music, and performers showcase their talents.
Every detail of the event reflected the heart of Iowa Colony’s community spirit. ”I’m just grateful that the city of Iowa Colony had its first-ever MLK parade,” said Iowa Colony Councilwoman Arnetta Murray. “It is important that we lift the dream that Dr. Martin talked about.”
The parade featured themes of justice, equality, and hope, paying homage to Dr. King’s legacy. Community groups marched proudly, waving banners, and handing out treats to the delighted children in the audience.
Celebrating at Freedom Field
The festivities didn’t end with the parade—they were just getting started! The celebration carried on at Alumni Hall at Freedom Field, where attendees enjoyed a lively mix of food, unique vendors, and vibrant entertainment.
The event program at Freedom Field kept the energy and spirit of the day alive, bringing the community together in a memorable and joyous way.
Families gathered to enjoy the entertainment, share laughs, and connect with friends and neighbors. Vendors provided delicious food and drinks, adding to the festive atmosphere.
While everyone was having a great time, Councilwoman Murray took a moment to highlight the deeper significance of the parade.
Councilwoman Murray emphasized the importance of unity within the community, saying, “We got to unify. We got to come together and keep going. It’s got to be a fight. That’s just part of life. But you can’t stop.” Her powerful words served as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to keep Dr. King’s dream alive.
Why this day mattered
The parade and celebration weren’t just a great time—they carried a deeper message. As Councilwoman Murray noted, “This parade is more than an event; it’s a statement of our commitment to justice, equality, and unity.”
Dr. King’s dream of inclusion and equity was brought to life through this incredible community effort. The parade celebrated not only his legacy but also the diversity and resilience that make Iowa Colony special.
Looking ahead
The inaugural Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Iowa Colony set a high standard for future celebrations. As the day came to an end, Councilwoman Murray shared her excitement about this becoming an annual tradition for Iowa Colony.
