‘Stay off the roads’: Freezing temps causing ice to reform on Houston area roadways

HOUSTON – Law enforcement in Houston and across the area are repeating the message -- stay off the roadways Wednesday morning.

Despite sunshine leading to some melting following Tuesday’s snow, freezing temperatures moved back into the Houston area. This means any snow or ice that melted during the day Tuesday refroze. That’s created slick conditions.

Houston Police say icy road conditions are returning to the freeways. Multiple crashes were reported Tuesday.

“Essentially, they’re going to be driving on an ice rink,” said Cpt. Greyson Wilson with HPD. “So the message is clear from us that please stay off the roadways, stay off the overpasses by driving on those roadways. You’re not only putting yourself at risk, you’re putting first responders at risk that you have to go out there and other people that are unfortunately on the roadway.”

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office also says some areas are starting to deal with ice.

Lt. Terry Garza says ice is being reported on the FM 1960 entrance ramp to Highway 249. FM 1960 between Cypresswood and Lee Road is also dealing with ice.

Law enforcement are advising people to stay off the roads until conditions improve later Wednesday.
