7 San Antonio police officers shot while responding to call, gunman dead

SAN ANTONIO – Seven police officers with the San Antonio PD were wounded after a shooting on the north side. Investigators said the gunman has died.

According to our sister station, KSAT, it all started just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex in San Antonio’s Stone Oak neighborhood for a suicide in progress call.

SAPD Chief William McManus initially said during their first news conference four officers were hurt, but a subsequent update revealed 3 additional officers suffered gunshot wounds. The first four officers were rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but it’s unclear what condition the other three officers were in.

KSAT further reports the gunman, an unidentified man in his 40s, barricaded himself inside the apartment complex for several hours. McManus did not specify when the incident ended but confirmed the man died; although it’s unspecified if he died from a shootout with the police or if he turned the gun on himself.

A Stone Oak resident told KSAT that he heard “one big bang” while studying in his apartment, but he didn’t think much of the noise.

“My mom, she lives with me, so she told me to come outside (to) the balcony,” the resident said. “She heard all these noises. Sure enough, there’s (sic) like helicopters flying everywhere.”

The shooter has not been identified but Chief McManus told KSAT he was arrested on January 18 but recently bonded out of Bexar County Jail.
