KATY, Texas – A man is dead after the Harris County Sheriff’s Office says he was shot at a home in the Katy area Monday.

The sheriff’s office said it happened at a home on Brighton Springs Lane near Clay Road. Sgt. Miller with the sheriff’s office described it as a “family disturbance that all started when a 22-year-old son was “enraged” and throwing bricks at the window while there were several other relatives inside.

Sgt. Miller noted they have had previous calls about the young man and even have had officers and their crisis response team deployed out as a result.

Outside the home, this time, deputies found the unidentified son suffering from a gunshot wound, and despite efforts to save him, Sgt. Miller said he succumbed to his injuries.

Based on the preliminary evidence they gathered, Sgt. Miller said some of the relatives were trying to calm the 22-year-old, who was having some sort of a mental disturbance, outside the home, when he started hurling bricks toward cars passing by on the street and punching out windows.

Aside from vehicle damage, HCSO confirmed no one reported any physical injuries.

One of the relatives was able to calm him down briefly, but Sgt. Miller said he started throwing bricks at the home and threatening family members before turning his attention toward his father.

“At some point, our victim confronted the father, who then felt threatened and at which point, he discharged his firearm one time,” he explained.

An investigation into how everything unfolded is currently underway, at which point Sgt. Miller said the evidence will be turned over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to determine what charges if any should be filed.
