HOUSTON – A grassroots organization, The People’s Union, is calling for a nationwide economic blackout on Feb. 28 in response to the federal government’s rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
The 24-hour protest, set to begin at 12 a.m., urges participants to refrain from making any purchases, both online and in physical stores.

The group is specifically targeting major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy, while also encouraging supporters to avoid spending on fast food and gas. If purchases are necessary, The People’s Union is asking consumers to support small, local businesses instead.
“If we disrupt the economy for just ONE day, it sends a powerful message,” The People’s Union wrote on its website. “This blackout is about reminding corporations and lawmakers that the people have power, and we won’t stand by as DEI initiatives are dismantled.”
The People’s Union, which describes itself as a coalition of Americans seeking to reclaim control over corporate influence, said the boycott is intended to highlight the economic strength of communities affected by DEI rollbacks.
While it’s unclear how much financial impact the protest could have on major companies, organizers say the movement is already gaining traction among supporters of DEI policies.
