Father leaves injured family behind after fleeing crash scene in north Houston

HOUSTON – Five people including four children were taken to a hospital after a major crash in North Houston Tuesday.

Houston Police say it happened in the 5300 block of Yale Street, just south of W. Tidwell Road.

Police say two vehicles were involved. A man and woman in one car, a Chevrolet Avalanche, were trying to make a right hand turn from an inside lane when a Ford Expedition going an estimated 100 mph in a 35 mph zone on Yale Street struck the Avalanche.

The impact caused the Expedition to go airborne, landing in a nearby drainage ditch. The vehicle was occupied by a man, woman, and four children.

One of the children, an 8-year-old girl, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police say the man in the car, described as the father of the children, ran away from the scene and another vehicle picked him up and drove away. Investigators are following up on leads to try and track down the man.

“I have no idea what was going through his mind at the time, I don’t know if there is some other reason he felt he needed to flee,” said Cpt. Ryan Watson with HPD.

Officers rescued the man’s wife and the other three children from the ditch. They were all taken to a hospital with two of them in serious, but stable condition. Three others are in critical, but stable condition.

Watson said the injuries are serious, but it appears everyone should survive the crash.

Police say the people in the Avalanche stayed at the scene, showed no signs of impairment, and have cooperated with authorities.
