Suspect arrested in Hillcroft bar mass shooting

Officials believe second suspect might have fled to Mexico

The man who was arrested for involvement in a shooting at a sports bar over the weekend has been identified as a Venezuelan national, court records show.

Jose Miguel Briceno, 25, has been charged with aggravated assault through a mass shooting. He was given a bond of $1,000,000.

Briceno appeared in PC court at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, and his next court date is scheduled for Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Police believe Briceno shot six people when he opened fire into the entryway of the Latina’s Sports Bar at around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. In a press release, officials said four of the victims—three males ages 21, 25, and 43, and a 53-year-old woman—are still in critical condition. The additional victims—a 28-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman—suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The arrest happened after Houston Police Department released surveillance footage of the suspect on X.

Briceno has a previous conviction of assault causing bodily injury to a family member, which he pleaded guilty to in Montgomery County in 2023. KPRC 2 also learned that Briceno is a Venezuelan national who has an ICE hold.

Authorities believe the second suspect who remains on-the-run might have fled to Mexico.

Anyone with information on the identity or whereabouts of the second suspect is urged to contact the HPD Major Assaults Division at 713-308-8800 or speak anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Responding officers met with Houston Fire Department crews, who transported three gunshot victims to a local hospital. Three additional victims were taken by private vehicle, bringing the total number of injured males to six. Four of the victims were identified as being in in critical condition and undergoing surgery.

Notably, the establishment was operating past legal hours, serving alcohol after 2 a.m.
