HUMBLE, Texas – A woman suspects an inside job after her Humble storage unit was broken into and at least $4,500 worth of belongings were either damaged or stolen.
Lashareya Durden has rented a unit from CubeSmart storage on Atascocita Road for almost a year. She said she first had suspicions that someone had tampered with her unit when she found the lock had been changed.
“I had to get the office to cut it off,” she told KPRC 2.
Once she got inside, she found someone had gone through her stuff.
“You see all the boxes opened. This is missing, it had my equipment in here… the boxes, my desk is broken,” she said.
Durden found out she wasn’t alone. According to her, thieves have hit between 15 and 20 storage units at the facility over the last several months. She learned of others through reviews she saw online.
“Over $4,800 worth of items were stolen from that unit and it seemed like a cover up as well. And they just recommend periodically taking pictures of items that you have because stuff can come up missing,” she said.
Durden says its not easy for customers to get in or out of the facility. Besides the lock to the actual unit, a code is required for customers to both get in and out.
“This is a huge setback. I’m in the middle of trying to find us a safe home, and I can’t even… this is my home away from home and it was destroyed,” she said.
Houston Police say they have referred this case to their property and financial division to conduct a thorough investigation.
KPRC 2′s Deven Clarke reached out to the CubeSmart and spoke to a manager who initially hung up the phone on him. He called back again and was told to contact corporate through email. So far, we have not heard back.
