Aldine ISD teacher released from jail

An Aldine ISD teacher, Derrick Banks, has been released from jail after being accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy he met online in 2020–21. Banks was hired by Aldine ISD in August 2023, two months before a warrant was issued for his arrest, but he continued working for the district. He is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.

F-16 Thunderbird crash in California

In California, the pilot of an F-16 Thunderbird fighter jet is recovering after a crash that was caught on camera. The pilot ejected safely moments before the jet hit the ground. The Air Force says the incident occurred during a training mission yesterday. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

New Jeffrey Epstein photos released

The House Oversight Committee has released previously unseen photos and video from Jeffrey Epstein’s private island, showcasing resort-style grounds and rooms within the home. Lawmakers have described the images as disturbing. The Justice Department has two weeks to release the remaining Epstein files after Congress passed a law last month.

Global child deaths projected to rise

For the first time this century, the number of child deaths worldwide is projected to rise amid global health funding cuts. According to a new report from the Gates Foundation, an estimated 4.8 million children will die before age five this year. The foundation is urging governments to invest in primary health care and emphasizes routine immunizations as a “best buy” in public health.

Trump rolls back fuel-efficiency rules

President Donald Trump is rolling back Biden-era fuel-efficiency standards that would have pushed cars and light trucks to about 50 miles per gallon by 2031. The rules were also expected to encourage more sales of electric vehicles.
