The driver did not stop and fled at a high rate of speed, striking Officer Sean Brinson head-on as he was responding to assist.
Officer Brinson was extricated from the vehicle, given medical treatment and transported to a Houston-area hospital with severe injuries.
Tuesday afternoon, the Huntsville Police Department provided an update on Brinson’s condition. The agency says he was taken into surgery around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday to address severe internal injuries suffered in the crash.
While the surgery went well, the department said he was taken for another operation to address injuries to his legs.
“He is still in critical condition and will likely need several more surgeries over the coming weeks,” the department said.
Before coming to the Huntsville Police Department, Brinson served in the United States Marine Corps and as a police officer with the Dumas Police Department in the Texas Panhandle.
Officer Brinson came to the Huntsville PD in 2021 and has a wife and two children.
“We appreciate the outpouring of support and have had numerous questions about donating to Sean. Prosperity Bank has established an account for monetary donations. Those can be taken to Prosperity Bank on 11th Street or any other Prosperity Bank location. Donations can also be made at the Huntsville Police Department, and we will ensure that they are directed to the family,” the department said. “Please continue to pray for Sean and his family. We appreciate the support and will continue to update his condition moving forward.”
On Wednesday, the department shared an update. Brinson remains in critical condition and is in intensive care.
The suspect was also hospitalized in critical condition.
“The suspect was transported to a Houston-area hospital in critical condition. Due to the extent of his injuries, he was not arrested at the time, and charges are being considered as the investigation continues. The vehicle was confirmed stolen, and items inside were linked to burglaries reported earlier in the night,” the department said.
