Suspect arrested after deputies bust alleged rooster fighting ring in Crosby

Harris County Sheriff’s Office says around 300 live roosters found, around 50 dead

CROSBY, Texas – Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office arrested Magdaleno Herrera, 45, on Saturday for allegedly operating a rooster fighting ring in Crosby.

Five spectators have also been cited, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said they found approximately 300 live roosters caged up and around 50 dead at a residence on Danek Road near Fairview Drive.

HCSO Sgt. Clinton Nash said a Good Samaritan tipped off authorities around 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Deputies said they could hear the roosters when they arrived. Several people tried to flee but were detained.

The sheriff’s office said Herrera was booked into the Harris County Jail on a misdemeanor charge of cockfighting: space, owns, trains and equips.

Authorities said the rescued roosters will be under the care of the Houston Humane Society.

Court records show Herrera is due back in court on Jan. 2, 2026.
