Shelter-in-place lifted as crews continue to battle massive recycling plant fire in Dayton

DAYTON, Texas – Multiple fire departments are still working to put out a massive fire at a recycling plant in Liberty County.

The fire started Tuesday at the OmniSource recycling facility located inside Gulf Inland Logistics Park on Riverbend Way in Dayton.

The Liberty County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security lifted the shelter-in-place order for residents within the triangular perimeter around the plant Wedesnday around 5 a.m.

The shelter-in-place was issued Tuesday night out of “an abundance of caution.”

Officials said a massive pile of ground-up appliances, nearly 60 feet tall, caught fire, and as of Wednesday morning, it continues to burn.

Firefighters have been pouring large amounts of water onto the pile and say they have contained the fire, which is why the shelter-in-place was lifted.
