Man hospitalized with self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading deputies on high-speed chase through La Porte

LA PORTE, Texas – A man has been hospitalized after shooting himself in the head after leading deputies on a chase through La Porte Friday morning.

Deputies with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said the chase began just after 1:30 a.m. on Highway 146 when they attempted to pull over the suspect for a non-functioning brake light.

The suspect, identified as a 47-year-old Roger Turner, refused to stop, leading deputies on a chase down Highway 146, at which speeds during the chase reached 100 mph, deputies said.

The chase eventually ended when Turner stopped his vehicle near a gas station on McCabe Road in La Porte.

Deputies said Turner tried to exit his vehicle while it was still in motion, but fell and ended up shooting himself in the head.

It’s not clear if the shooting was accidental, but deputies said they are investigating this as a possible suicide.

Turner was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Deputies said Turner had an active warrant with Harris County for delivery of a controlled substance. Deputies also said they found meth inside of Turner’s vehicle.
