HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left an armed suspect dead and an officer injured Wednesday afternoon in southwest Houston.

The shooting occurred around 3:50 p.m. in the 5800 block of Glenmont Drive, according to the Houston Police Department.

Authorities say an HPD patrol officer responded to a call about a suspicious person reportedly carrying a weapon near a school in the area.

When the officer arrived and attempted to make contact, the suspect immediately produced a gun and began firing.

The officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

During the exchange, the officer was also hit but sustained what officials described as a non-life-threatening injury.

After the shooting, the officer rendered first aid to the suspect until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witness describes moment of shooting, shares video

A witness told KPRC 2’s Corley Peel that she is the one who called 911 after seeing the man with the gun.

She said she had just picked up her child from a nearby school when the situation began to unfold, noting that several children were in the area at the time of the shooting.

She also shared cellphone video with KPRC 2 that appears to show the suspect and officer exchanging gunfire in the street. At least one round appeared to strike a window of a nearby apartment unit.

The identity of the deceased man has not yet been released, pending notification of family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been identified as HPD Officer C. Lopez. He was sworn in January 2025 and is assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division. He was treated at the scene for his injuries.

Investigators are conducting a standard review of the incident. No additional details have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
