Galena Park closes city parks overnight, increases security monitoring following weekend shooting

GALENA PARK, Texas – After a fatal shooting Sunday night where one person was killed and two others were seriously hurt, the City of Galena Park is making changes to ensure safety in the area.

The city says effective immediately, all city parks will close daily from 9:30 PM to 6:00 AM until further notice—without exception.

The city said it is also implementing 24/7 security monitoring stations.

“These measures will provide a strong, visible presence, continuous oversight, and a direct digital link to dispatch, ensuring immediate communication and rapid response at all times,” the city said.

Authorities say violations will also be enforced.

“These initial actions reflect our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of all residents. Expectations are not optional—compliance is required. We will not tolerate any actions that threaten the peace and security of our community,” the city said.

The shooting happened Sunday night at a basketball court located on Keene Street and 14th Street.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a group of men was gathered at the basketball court playing basketball when a possible fight broke out between two groups, and multiple shots were fired.

One person was found shot to death at the park, and two others attempted to run away but were found collapsed a short distance away.

Gonzalez said those two men were transported to the hospital in critical condition.
