ALVIN, Texas – Alvin Independent School District announced Wednesday that Wilder and Marek Elementary Schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year due to significant water damage as rounds of heavy rain and storms continue moving through the Houston area.

Initially, district officials said they expected both schools to reopen on Thursday, but that changed in a Wednesday afternoon update.

The closure does not set students back much. The last day of school in Alvin ISD is Friday, May 22, which was already an early release day.

In a message posted to social media, the district said:

“Due to extensive storm-related water damage at Wilder and Marek Elementary Schools, both campuses will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. Additional end-of-year information will be shared by your campus administrator. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we work to address these issues and ensure our campuses are safe for students and staff.”

The closures come as Southeast Texas remains under an unsettled weather pattern this week.

A line of storms moved through the Houston area overnight, and additional rounds of heavy rain are expected through Memorial Day weekend.

Our meteorologists warn that some areas could see 3 to 5 inches of rainfall or more this week, increasing the risk of street flooding and hazardous road conditions.

Drivers across the Houston area have already experienced slick roads and weather-related slowdowns during the Wednesday morning commute as storms continue moving through the region.
