Alleged gunman charged after teen shot in Montgomery County neighborhood; victim charged with filing false report

Shooter had criminal history, ICE hold, officials confirm

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – Authorities have identified the man accused of opening fire in a Montgomery County neighborhood, injuring a 17-year-old and triggering a tense standoff with deputies.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Saturday evening to reports of gunfire in the Kings Colony neighborhood near I-69 and SH 99.

Investigators say 39-year-old Juan Ayala-Montero fired multiple rounds during an altercation involving the 17-year-old.

Newly-released video from the sheriff’s office shows chaotic moments as residents came face-to-face with the gunman before law enforcement arrived.

When deputies reached the scene, authorities say Montero barricaded himself before eventually surrendering and being taken into custody.

Investigators recovered more than 30 shell casings from the scene. The injured 17-year-old was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover.

Montero is now charged with deadly conduct and is being held on an $80,000 bond.

The sheriff’s office also revealed Montero has a criminal history, an active federal ICE detainer, and had previously been deported from the United States.

Authorities said the 17-year-old victim was also charged with filing a false report to a peace officer after investigators determined he initially misled deputies into believing there were multiple victims involved in the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
