Homeowner shot at front doorstep, person of interest detained

Residents report man running through neighborhood, banging on doors

HOUSTON – A 35-year-old man is hospitalized after a stranger shot him on his own doorstep in Southeast Houston late Saturday night.

The incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. Saturday night, in the 5300 block of El Buey Way. According to Houston Police Department Lieutenant Pulido, the man knocked on the door of the victim’s house. When the homeowner opened the door, the stranger immediately opened fire and fled the scene.

Following the shooting, the man ran through the neighborhood, sparking panic among residents. Multiple neighbors dialed 911 to report a man erratically banging on their doors and screaming.

HPD officers flooded the area and used descriptions from witnesses to find the man just a few blocks away from the active crime scene. Officers quickly detained him, though authorities note that no gun has been recovered at this time.

Houston Fire DepartmentDivision paramedics treated the homeowner at the scene -- he was shot in the hip and one of his hands. He was taken to a local hospital and remains in stable condition.

Investigators confirmed that the victim and the suspect do not know each other. The detained man is currently classified as a person of interest, and the case has been referred to the HPD Major Assaults Division for further investigation.
