HOUSTON – The man accused of killing a Houston father who was trying to help recover his son’s stolen truck appeared before a judge Monday morning as family members remembered the victim as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community volunteer.

London Hogan is charged with murder, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting death of Louis Erebia.

Investigators say the deadly chain of events began Saturday afternoon with an armed robbery and ended hours later with Erebia being shot and killed outside a north Houston gas station.

Suspect appears in court

During a probable cause hearing Monday morning, a judge informed Hogan of the charges filed against him.

“Mr. Hogan, sir, you’re here for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and murder,” the judge said during the hearing.

Court records show the case has been assigned to the 339th District Court.

The judge also noted Hogan is currently on a five-year felony deferred adjudication stemming from an assault case filed in March 2024.

When asked whether he would be requesting legal representation, Hogan told the court he plans to seek a court-appointed attorney.

The judge said the trial court will make bond decisions.

Investigators say truck was stolen at gunpoint

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began around 2 p.m. Saturday after deputies responded to the 11800 block of Tidwell Road for an aggravated robbery.

Investigators said a man was putting gas into his blue Chevrolet Silverado when a suspect approached him and began asking questions about the truck.

Authorities said the suspect then pulled out a gun and stole the pickup.

The victim was able to track the truck using a GPS application that provided real-time location information.

Family members track down stolen truck

Authorities said the victim contacted family members and friends after the robbery.

Investigators said Louis Erebia and a family friend later used the GPS information to locate the stolen Silverado near Loop 610 and Airline Drive.

According to detectives, the truck became disabled after a crash.

Investigators said two suspects then got out of the vehicle and ran toward a nearby Chevron gas station.

What happened next turned deadly.

Confrontation ends in gunfire

Detectives said Erebia chased after the suspects.

During the confrontation, investigators said one of the suspects pulled out a gun and opened fire.

“The male suspect had produced a firearm, discharging the firearm and the victims sustained a gunshot wound,” Harris County Sheriff’s Office Detective Sergio Torres said.

Erebia and a family friend were both struck by gunfire.

Both men were transported to a hospital.

Investigators said Erebia later died from his injuries.

The second victim survived and was listed in stable condition.

Witnesses describe chaotic moments

Witnesses said the situation quickly turned chaotic after the crash.

“I think the people that robbed the truck, they panicked. They were trying to get away. They crashed. They ran that way down North Loop, towards the freeway,” one witness said.

The witness said seeing the shooting unfold was difficult to process.

“It was shocking. Nothing like that ever happened like that in front of me,” the witness said.

Investigators said the suspects eventually fled in another vehicle.

Authorities previously said they were searching for a male and female suspect who left the area in a black pickup truck.

Family remembers Louis Erebia

On Monday, Erebia’s family gathered alongside Crime Stoppers Houston to share more about the man they lost.

In a statement, relatives described Erebia as a devoted husband of 22 years, a father of five, and a grandfather of three.

They said he spent years volunteering at North Shore Little League, coaching children, maintaining fields, and helping families throughout the community.

Family members also said he served at his church and regularly volunteered whenever help was needed.

“He never held grudges, never met a stranger, and had a way of lighting up every room he entered,” the family said.

According to relatives, Erebia was known for helping neighbors, supporting community events, and putting others before himself.

His wife currently serves as a trustee with Galena Park ISD, where their children attended school.

‘He lost his life because he was courageous’

Family members said Erebia immediately sprang into action after learning his son had been robbed at gunpoint.

“When his son called in a panic after being robbed at gunpoint, Louis did what he had always done. He ran toward the people he loved,” the family’s statement said.

The family also addressed questions surrounding Erebia’s decision to pursue the suspects.

“Louis did not lose his life because he was reckless. He lost his life because he was courageous,” the statement continued.

Relatives said they believe Erebia was trying to protect a young man who remained in the parking lot when gunfire erupted.

“He spent his last minute on this earth exactly as he spent his life, protecting others, putting others first, and fighting for the people he loved,” the family said.

Family demands justice

The family is now calling for those responsible to be held fully accountable.

“We do not want watered-down sentences, lenient treatment, or easy bail,” the statement said.

The family added that five children lost their father, three grandchildren lost their grandfather, and a wife lost her husband.

“Louis gave his life protecting someone else. He deserves to be remembered for the hero he was,” the family said.

Investigation remains active

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting.

Investigators previously said they were searching for additional suspects, including a male and female who allegedly fled the scene in a black pickup truck after the shooting.

Detectives continue reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses as they work to determine the role each person played in the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers Houston at 713-222-TIPS or the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
