15-year-old drowns in Montgomery County after wading into floodwater near retention pond, sinking in deeper water

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – Authorities say a 15-year-old boy died after drowning in a flooded retention pond near Magnolia Tuesday evening.

According to Lt. Richard Durbin with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, it happened near a construction road located near the 30000 block of Turriff Circle.

Durbin says first responders received a 911 call around 6 p.m. from a group of teenagers who had been riding 4-wheelers and hanging out on the construction road.

They told authorities one of their friends, a 15-year-old, had gone missing after wading into floodwaters near a retention pond. Durbin says the teen sank after the water suddenly got deeper. He did not resurface.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene and boats and dive teams were also deployed. First responders eventually located the boy’s body underwater using sonar technology.

Durbin says there are no signs of any foul play. The sheriff’s office has opened a death investigation, which is standard protocol for any drowning death.

The teenager’s identity is not being released.
