GALVESTON, Texas – A large fire destroyed a seafood distribution warehouse along Galveston’s waterfront Wednesday night, sending towering flames and thick black smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles.
The fire broke out around 8:40 p.m. at Texas Gulf Seafood on Pier 7, prompting a large response from the Galveston Fire Department and several neighboring fire agencies.
Within minutes, the fire was shooting through the roof of the warehouse as firefighters worked to keep it from spreading to nearby buildings along the wharves.
Officials said firefighters rescued three people inside the building and a dog, but no injuries were reported. One firefighter went to a hospital for dehydration but has since been released.
Crews contained the fire early Thursday morning, but officials said firefighters remain on scene to monitor conditions and check for hotspots.
By the time the flames were brought under control, the seafood distribution warehouse had been destroyed.
Texas Gulf Seafood supplies seafood to restaurants and grocery stores.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials have not said what may have sparked the blaze.
