HOUSTON – A man has been taken into custody after a hours-long standoff at an apartment complex on Houston’s north side.
It happened near the intersection of E. Crosstimbers and Fulton Street.
Houston police responded to the apartment at around 3 p.m. after getting a report of a woman that was possibly being held hostage inside the apartment.
Lt. Larry Crowson says the woman had called a victim’s service officer and requested help.
When officers arrived, Crowson said the people who answered the door at first denied that the victim or the suspect were there.
The officers started investigating more and found out that the victim, the suspect’s mother, and the suspect were indeed inside the apartment. Officers were able to get the victim and the suspect’s mother out of the apartment and attempted to use a loudspeaker to get the suspect to come out, but he refused.
Crowson said there was a report from earlier that the man had possibly threatened the woman with a pistol. Because of the potential that the suspect was armed, SWAT officers were requested.
Crowson said SWAT ended up breaking a window and sending a drone into the apartment where they found the suspect sleeping. He ended up waking up and coming outside, where he became combative with officers. Crowson said officers used a taser on the suspect to get him into custody.
Crowson said the man had an open warrant for assault - family violence by strangulation against the woman that was inside. He is being held on the warrant and they will be contacting the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to see what additional charges he will face.
