Driver says he was blinded by sun before the fatal crash

HOUSTON – Charges have been filed against a driver who fatally struck a man who was crossing an intersection with a walker Wednesday morning in southeast Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.

The suspect, Bernandino Bautista, 55, has been charged with criminally negligent homicide. The victim was a 62-year-old man.

The crash was reported at 7:40 a.m. at the intersection of Moline Street and Telephone Road.

Investigators learned the driver of a black Toyota Solara was traveling eastbound in the 7300 block of Moline Street when he approached an intersection with a stop sign. The driver, identified as Bautista, reportedly failed to stop before entering the crosswalk and struck the victim, who was crossing the street within the crosswalk.

Bautista reportedly told police he was blinded by the sun when he pulled toward the intersection and hit the man.

Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Bautista was arrested and charged.

The investigation is continuing.
