Four people rescued from burning yacht off Galveston coast

GALVESTON, Texas – Boaters in Galveston Bay rescued three adults and a 6-year-old child from a burning yacht on Saturday.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it happened at around 6:30 p.m. near the tip of the south jetty.

"It was thick black smoke. The vessel was completely engulfed in flames. By the time we arrived on scene, there was a significant portion of the vessel under the water line," said Joseph Lovell with the U.S. Coast Guard.

The fire reportedly started in the engine room of the yacht.

All four passengers jumped into the water after the fire started and two were not wearing life jackets.

Some good Samaritans came to their rescue.

"They were a little sad and disappointed about the boat but definitely happy that they were rescued and nobody was hurt," said Adam McDaniel with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Nobody was hurt in the fire.
