Man shot to death in road rage incident in Cinco Ranch

KATY, Texas – The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said a man is dead after he was shot during a road-rage incident in Cinco Ranch.

The shooting was reported about 1:20 p.m. near The Villagio at the intersection of Peek Road and Westheimer Parkway.

Deputies said John Somich, 51, got out of a Honda SUV and began arguing with another man driving a yellow Honda convertible. Somich began punching the other man in the head, authorities said.

"We have several witnesses to the shooting, but one of the individuals got out of his vehicle and confronted the other, they exchanged some type of words, we're told it got a little physical and one individual got out a handgun and started shooting the other," explained Sheriff Troy Nehls.

The sheriff's office said the shooter was detained and questioned, but has since been released and deputies are referring the case to a grand jury.

Deputies have not released the shooter's name.

"It's my understanding he did have a license to carry permit. We have investiators out here taliking with him," Nehls said.

KPRC 2 reporter Sophia Beausoleil said that she was headed to a flood volunteer center at a church when she saw a large number of law enforcement and emergency vehicles responding near the intersection.

The area was busy since there were many people who are volunteering to help flood victims. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots.

Beausoleil said she could see members of the National Guard performing CPR on someone and another person being put in handcuffs.

Beausoleil said the shooting happened near two buildings where storm victims were being helped.
