First lady's plane makes emergency landing in Washington

WASHINGTON – The airplane carrying first lady Melania Trump made an emergency landing Wednesday in Washington, according to NBC News.

About 10 minutes into the flight to Philadelphia, a haze of smoke and a burning smell filled the cabin, according to NBC News. Secret Service agents headed toward the front of the plane.

Members of the press who were aboard the plane were brought wet towels and told to place them over their faces if the smell became too strong, NBC News reported.

NBC News reported that the plane turned around and landed at Joint Base Andrews. The smoke and smell slowly dissipated.

One of the crew members told NBC News that a communications unit on the plane overheated, but the White House has not immediately confirmed that report.

A spokeswoman said the first lady was "fine" after the "minor mechanical issue" aboard her plane.
