HOUSTON – This is the last weekend of freedom before students head back to class in area school districts.
Before the first day in Klein ISD, we put the spotlight on Mahaffey Elementary School.
The principal of that school is very familiar with the district, she is actually a Klein ISD graduate.
Principal Dayna Hernandez is truly a hometown girl.
"I've been a student here at the Klein ISD since 1979. I entered kindergarten in Klein ISD and graduated high school from Klein High School in 1991," Hernandez said.
She went to college, got her degree and returned to Klein.
"This is a school district that has a tight community, and we value our community. As a former student here, a parent and now an educator in this district, I know what our grass roots are," she said.
In a community she's called home for almost her entire life and all of her career, Mahaffey Elementary opens for the first time Monday.
Hernandez was last year's elementary Principal of the Year.
