Spring ISD teacher says student pushed her, asks to press charges

HOUSTON – A teacher told police for the Spring Independent School District that a student pushed her on Tuesday while she was teaching chemistry to special education students at Dekaney High School on Tuesday.

In a signed report to Spring ISD police, teacher Cheri La Blanche said two students remained standing after she asked everyone to be seated. Then, she said, two students rushed to the front of the class.

"…I extend my arm out toward the board gesturing for ... the student to turn around and sit down. However she continues to rush forward and pushes into me pushing my arm and me out of the way. I automatically pushed her away from me and left the room for assistance," La Blanche's report says.

La Blanche said the class was out of control when she returned and a student threw things at her. In the statement, the teacher asked to press charges for assault.

Spring ISD released a statement that read in part: "Allegations that a Dekaney High School teacher used inappropriate discipline during a class disruption May 19 are being investigated. The teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and has been reassigned to home duty until the investigation is complete. The student involved in the disruption has received appropriate disciplinary action. Spring ISD takes allegations of this nature very seriously. The safety of our students as well as our teachers and staff is our number one priority."

"We do get calls from our members in Spring ISD that they're not getting the administrative support that they feel they need," said Tanner Williams with the Texas American Federation of Teachers.

He said he had not heard about the investigation.

"Sometimes they're not sending students to the principal's office for a referral because they're afraid nothing's going to get accomplished," said Williams.
