St. Stephens Church

HOUSTON – Several community members gathered Sunday at St. Stephens Church in downtown Houston, but not to attend services.

Instead they were there to try and to save the church.

Members say the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has decided to sell the land and building and merge them with another church. St. Stephens was founded by immigrants in 1932.

Those who attend services don't want to see the church go. In fact, they say they plan to appeal the decision.

"We could be the shining in this community. We could be the light to everyone who's coming. I know there is development happening, and town homes, but we as Catholics can be the light and shine to the rest," church member Carmen Gallegos said.

Church members said they're supposed to be out of their building by May 8.
