Star of Hope provides help for homeless

HOUSTON – Many of us know a little time in the salon can have a lasting effect, but for the women with Star of Hope, it can be life-changing.

Five months ago, Brandy Bass’ life was, as she describes it, “Very dark, didn’t know my direction, where I was going.”

Then, a ray of light appeared when she found Star of Hope, which is an organization dedicated to helping homeless men and women.

“They’re helping me with my progress, my transition on, um, overcoming my struggles from my addiction,” said Bass.

However, today is not about where she came from, it’s about where she’s going.

Felecia Harvey, with the Jerusalem School of Cosmetology, is lending a hand.

“Being able to give back to the community, being able to touch lives and empower lives and just make these ladies be ready for a ho-ho Merry Christmas,” said Harvey.

Bass, along with about 50 other women from Star of Hope, are being treated to haircuts, styling, coloring, clothes, makeup and a meal.

“These ladies can walk out of here today with a total makeover from the head to the toe and if they don’t have hair, if they can’t grow it, we’ll sew it and won’t nobody know it,” said Harvey.

“I’m very grateful to be able to have the opportunity to be able to be pampered, spoiled, in this way and fashion,” said Bass.

“That’s our goal, to get them focused on moving forward, so as they go into the new year, they can look beautiful. They can move forward believing that everything’s going to turn out all right,” says Henri Williams, a spiritual life coordinator with Star of Hope.

The day went so well that Harvey is hoping to turn this into an annual event.
