KATY, Texas – The Katy Independent School District is calling a violent incident involving as many as 10 students on one of its campuses "gang-related."
Monday morning, parents at the Katy Independent School District's T.H. McDonald Junior High received a letter about gang violence on school grounds.
The letter from KISD reads:
"On Monday, September 21, 2015, McDonald Junior High staff was made aware of a physical altercation that occurred in the boy's restroom involving approximately 10 male students. An investigation by Katy ISD police is still pending. However, at this time, it is believed that one individual voluntarily agreed to be physically assaulted by the other students involved, as part of a gang-related activity.
"No arrests have been made regarding this incident, however, all of the students involved have received disciplinary action and were suspended for three days in accordance with the District's Disciplinary Management Plan. Six of the 10 students were also referred to the Opportunity Awareness Center, a Katy ISD discipline alternative campus.
"The behavior of these individuals is not reflective of McDonald Junior High standards, and such incidents are taken very seriously. The safety of our students and staff is top priority, and we will continue to work to ensure a safe learning environment for all students."
Some parents didn't even know about the attack until the letter was sent home.
"It's sad for me to say this, but a lot of these kids have no self confidence in themselves, so when they are bullied on, they feel like they have no way around it or away from it," said parent Mary Barrett.
KPRC 2 asked the district if the student who was attacked in the restroom suffered any major injuries, but officials would not say whether the boy had to be hospitalized.
