Boy left on Spring doorstep dropped off at wrong house, father says

SPRING, Texas – The unidentified woman who abandoned a 2 year old boy on a doorstep Wednesday night has been interviewed and questioned by investigators with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators tell Channel 2 News they are still investigating this case and that they have released a second video which captured the event on Wednesday night.

The father of the boy who was left on the doorstep of the Spring home said a friend of the boys mother dropped the child off at the wrong house and just left him there all alone.

“You just don’t leave no two-year-old kid at no door. Ring a doorbell and run. He’s just a kid -- it ain't right”, said Willie Simmons.

The incident was reported about 8:20 p.m. at a home in the 30700 block of Legends Ridge Drive.

According to Montgomery County deputies, a woman called 911 and said that she found a boy on her stoop after hearing a knock at her door.

Investigators said surveillance video shows a woman arrive at the home in a white car, run to the front door of the home, lift the child by one arm to place him on the porch, ring the doorbell several times, knock on the door, run back to the car and leave. The entire incident took 23 seconds.

The boy’s father, who identified the boy as 2-year-old Royal Simmons, told KPRC2’s Taisha Walker that the friend dropped his son off at a neighbor’s home instead of his house.

Royal Simmons is seen in this undated image provided by his father on Oct. 18, 2018.

Lt. Scott Spencer, of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, said that the child’s father received a text message from the child’s mother saying the boy would be dropped off at his house on Wednesday afternoon. Spencer said the child was not dropped off as planned because the mother was admitted to the hospital, and asked a friend to drop the child off at the father’s house. When the child was not dropped off as planned, Spencer said, the father assumed the mother had changed her mind and left the house for the evening.

Spencer said deputies canvassed the neighborhood when the child was found Wednesday night, but no one answered the door at the father’s house.

The woman in the video has been identified and detectives plan to interview her, Spencer said. She could face a charge of child abandonment, Spencer said.

"Had she waited just seven seconds, the homeowner would have opened the door and maybe would've started a conversation, dialogue to direct her to the correct house to drop the child off," Spencer said.

Spencer said the boy was in good spirits and was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services. Officials at CPS are working to reunite the child with his family, Spencer said.
