HOUSTON – A woman was killed Sunday afternoon in a five-vehicle accident in northeast Houston, police said.
The incident was reported at 3:10 p.m. in the 3000 block of Broyles Street near Tiffin.
Houston police said two vehicles, a black Mazda 6 and a red Ford pickup truck, were driving over 70 mph in a 35 mph zone, headed south on Broyles.
Investigators said the pickup veered into the lane with the Mazda and appeared to lose control.
The Mazda flipped over, hit a street sign and a powerline, smashed into a tree and then struck a house before it stopped.
Witnesses Joe and Jennifer Mays said the pickup went airborne, flipped and crashed into three separate vehicles parked in a homeowner’s driveway.
“Ah, man, it was like a movie. I’ve seen this scene in a bunch of movies before … with the vehicle flipping over and over and crashing. We saw the red truck just flipping,” said Joe Mays, who was on his porch eating Easter dinner when the accident happened across the street.
“He flipped that truck up in the air and then flipped over like five times before crashing down on them other cars that was parked,” said Jennifer Mays.
Witnesses said the driver of the Mazda was thrown from her car.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
As for the driver of the pickup, eyewitnesses said he crawled out of the wreckage.
“I saw him crawl out. He crawled out of that truck. He climbed out and he had scratches and I think a broken finger or a broken wrist, but he got out as if to say, ‘Hey, I’m OK,’” Joe Mays said.
Police said the driver of the Ford was questioned and released.
The Houston Police Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating.
The case will be presented to the Harris County grand jury for possible charges.
