Houston Newsmakers Feb. 8: Houston Super Bowl leader says city could make $500 million

Houston agency leader of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Chairman & CEO of Southern News Group also join Khambrel Marshall

HOUSTONSallie Sargent, President and CEO of the Houston Super Bowl Committee, said Houston's game in 2017 could earn $500 million on a $50 million investment.

Sargent tells Khambrel Marshall the plans for the game are moving forward and that the game will provide billions of visual impressions of Houston, way more advertising than the city could ever pay for. Much still must be done but the area around Discovery Green and the George R. Brown Convention Center will be a definite hub of activity.

"We really want to create a hub of activity so we'll use Discovery Green and hopefully go all the way from Minute Maid Park to Toyota Center," said Sargent. "It will really create a nice footprint so that we can do a lot of programming and festivities for the locals."

Also this week, Pierce Bush, the Houston agency leader of Big Brothers Big Sisters, talks about the importance of mentoring in the lives of children.

Bush is joined by Big Sister of the Year Kristin Daniel who said she has gained as much from her "little" as she has provided.

Bush said the challenge is getting more volunteers to serve the needs.

"We're making a big impact in Houston, but we know we can do so much more," he said. "We have about 850 kids on our waiting list, most of them are young boys who are looking for a male role model."

Chinese New Year is Thursday, Feb. 19 and Houston's 19th Annual Lunar Fest to celebrate will be Saturday, Feb. 21.

Wea Lee, the chairman and CEO of the Southern News Group, is sponsoring the event and said it is a great way to showcase a part of Houston's very diverse community.

"We speak more than 88 languages in my international management district," he said. "We need to learn from each other and having this cultural event can help each other understand better."

"Houston Newsmakers" airs Sunday morning at 10 a.m., right after "Meet the Press."
