Next Chip and Joanna Gaines? Galveston couple vying to be next HGTV stars

GALVESTON, Texas – A Galveston couple is vying for a spot on the HGTV roster with a focus on reclaiming Galveston homes set for demolition.

The pilot of Michael and Ashley Cordray’s show, “Saving Galveston,” is set to run on Saturday at 1 p.m. CDT.

The couple lives in Galveston and runs Save 1900 Realty. The company’s Facebook page says “(The company) is far more than simply a real estate and construction company. We consider ourselves stewards of Galveston Island's rich history.”

In a promotional video on HGTV’s Facebook page, Ashley explains the allure of the Galveston home scene: “All of these houses, they have character. They have the nice trim work. They have the gingerbread detail. You know, they all have their own story, but they are tearing down houses all over town, and it’s sad. We want to be the people who bring (the houses) back.”

“We take houses that are scheduled to be demolished and we give them new life,” Michael said.

If the show is picked up by the network, the Cordrays would join the HGTV roster of wildly popular home improvement and neighborhood revitalization shows.

This isn’t the first time a Texas couple has reached for HGTV stardom. The wildly popular “Fixer Upper,” starring Chip and Joanna Gaines, put Waco, Texas, on the map. As a result of the show, the city became much more than a memory of a federal raid on a cult compound. The area was revitalized with new homes and the Gaines’ businesses became a destination for the show’s devotees.
