Houston is abuzz about the College Football Playoff Final Monday night, with two traditional power programs trying to reclaim glory.
The Michigan Wolverines are the winningest program in college football but haven’t won a national title since before the Bowl Championship Series era, in 1997. The Washington Huskies were top dogs in 1991 and are making their first playoff run since the Chris Petersen-led team in 2016.

Both teams should bring plenty of fans to Houston to celebrate their programs.
“We roll out the red carpet. We have that southern hospitality,” said Janis Burke, the CEO of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority. “I think we always want to put our Houston thumbprint on anything that we host. We’re a foodie town - food and football should be winner.”
This is the 10th and final year of the 4-team college football playoff. CFP Director Bill Hancock is excited to expand to 12 teams beginning with the 2024 season but believes the 4-team playoff has been largely good for college football.
He’s also a big proponent of Houston as a host city.
“Houston has everything we need,” said Hancock. “Infrastructure, hotels, stadiums, airports and a wonderful host committee to fulfill the obligations of the community.”
The matchup between No. 1 Michigan and No. 2 Washington is Monday night at NRG Stadium, with a bevy of events leading up to the game.
