Doug Dillard: Triumphing over challenges, inspiring H-Town at the Houston Sports Awards

Doug Dillard’s remarkable journey: From wheelchair triumphs to Houston Sports Awards honoree

In the vibrant heart of Houston, anticipation is building as the Houston Sports Awards make their grand return on Jan. 30, promising an unforgettable night celebrating athletic excellence. Among the stars set to shine at this star-studded event is Doug Dillard, a wheelchair athlete and adaptive sports advocate whose story of resilience and triumph is nothing short of inspirational.

Recently, KPRC 2 Sports Director Randy McIlvoy had the privilege of sitting down with Dillard to delve into a narrative that goes beyond sports achievements. It’s a tale of overcoming obstacles, embracing change, and embodying the indomitable spirit of sportsmanship.

Life often throws challenges our way, and for Dillard, the journey has been one of continuous adaptation. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of 18, Dillard faced the reality of muscle weakness and tightness. Reflecting on those early days, he remarked, “Something wasn’t right.” Yet, instead of succumbing to adversity, Dillard chose resilience.

“I got up to be able to walk with a cane again about, you know, that 11th year. And then, you know, age takes over,” Dillard shared. As his condition declined, three years ago, he made the courageous decision to embrace a wheelchair full-time, a choice that he now sees as opening doors, not limiting them.

Beyond the challenges, Dillard is a testament to the idea that obstacles can lead to new opportunities. Professionally, he serves as the CFO of DC Partners in St. Christopher Holdings, excelling in finance, accounting, analysis, and consulting. Dillard’s wheelchair has become a vehicle for his success, pushing him to be more active than ever.

“It’s almost like a protracted nightmare. And at the same time, going into the wheelchair has opened so many new doors for me, not only from a sports standpoint but just a career standpoint,” Dillard expressed.

He competes in marathons, plays basketball, mono-skis, and passionately pursues his true love—golf.

On the golf course, Dillard finds solace and a reminder that he can achieve anything he sets his sights on. “I love being outside, number one. And I love being able to just get better at something and succeed at it,” he shared.

Dillard’s commitment to continuous improvement extends beyond his personal achievements; he is also the co-founder of Be Able, a non-profit group dedicated to encouraging athletes with disabilities to enhance their physical and mental health.

In the realm of adaptive sports, Dillard firmly believes in breaking down boundaries.

“Finding somebody that’s done it and is willing to spend some time and show you, you know, hey, this is not impossible, keep going,” he emphasized.

As Doug Dillard takes center stage at the Houston Sports Awards, he not only represents athletic prowess but also stands as a symbol of triumph over adversity, an embodiment of the spirit that makes sports truly remarkable. His journey inspires not just those within the sports community but anyone facing challenges, proving that with resilience and determination, one can redefine what is possible.
