From battle to victory: Kingwood Park coach’s inspiring journey to the Houston Sports Awards

Coach Eric Coovert’s inspirational triumph: A journey of resilience and community support

In the heart of H-Town, excitement is reaching a fever pitch as the highly anticipated Houston Sports Awards make their grand return on Jan. 30 for the seventh consecutive year. This star-studded event is not just a celebration of athletic prowess but a night dedicated to honoring the best in high school, college, and professional sports, as well as those making a significant impact on the community.

Among the luminaries set to be spotlighted on this special night is Coach Eric Coovert from Kingwood Park High School, whose life underwent a profound transformation last year. Recently, KPRC 2 Sports Director Randy McIlvoy had the privilege of spending time with this remarkable individual, delving into a story of resilience, triumph, and the indomitable spirit that embodies the essence of sportsmanship.

As the calendar flipped to a new year, Eric Coovert found himself pausing not only to embrace the possibilities of the future but also to reflect on the extraordinary journey that unfolded in the previous months. The resilience of this Kingwood Park High School teacher, football, and wrestling coach became the beacon of hope and strength for an entire community. It was a tale that began eight months ago on June 4th, a day etched into Coovert’s memory as the moment his life took an unexpected turn.

Upon receiving the fateful call from his oncologist, Coovert’s world momentarily shattered. A routine colonoscopy had unveiled a tumor, leading to a diagnosis that no one anticipates: plasmablastic lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Yet, in the face of this daunting challenge, Coovert discovered a silver lining—a test of strength that, if conquered, would affirm his right to be a devoted father and cherish each day with renewed gratitude.

The subsequent months became a battlefield, with Coovert engaging in an extensive chemotherapy regimen. His support system, comprised of family and the tight-knit community at Kingwood Park, played an integral role in his journey. His wife, Emily, emerged as his steadfast rock, guiding him through the darkest days.

“Without her pushing me every single day, I don’t know if I would be able to do what I’m doing right now,” Coovert expressed, acknowledging the power of love in overcoming adversity.

In September, amid the ongoing battle, joy entered the Coovert household as Eric and Emily welcomed their first child. It was a testament to the resilience and hope that fueled their journey. By October, the long-awaited news arrived — Coovert was declared cancer-free.

The emotional impact of this victory echoed in Coovert’s words as he recalled the moment, “I cried. My wife was crying. It was beautiful.”

Before a pivotal football game, Coach Coovert shared the triumphant news with his players. A team that had been inspired to be relentless in their pursuits now witnessed their coach embody that very spirit.

“Your inspiration has made me stay relentless in my battle. And I got a call last night from my doctor. Now, I’m going 1-0 against cancer,” he declared, prompting cheers.

Coovert’s journey, from the depths of diagnosis to the pinnacle of victory, has not only touched the hearts of those close to him but has also inspired a broader community. His perspective on life’s purpose evolved, transcending personal triumph to a commitment to helping others facing their own battles. As he contemplates his recognition as an Inspiration Award honoree for the Houston Sports Awards, Coovert reflects on the 32 years leading up to this point, realizing that every moment has been worth it if it contributes to supporting others in their struggles.

“These last six to seven months have just blown me away because of all the support I’ve gotten, how much people have just shown their love for me and my family,” Coovert said. “My battle is just a way to help out other people. That’s the thing, it’s at this point whether I can motivate one person to continue going, whether I could go and do a lymphoma and leukemia walk and be there to support other people, my purpose in life is to help out other people. And just hearing that I’m even nominated for this award, kind of makes me think that the 32 years of my life leading up to this have all been like, every single moment’s been worth it, because I’m helping out people with their battles. And that’s my goal in life.”

Coach Eric Coovert’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the power of community, and the transformative impact of sports beyond the field. As the Houston Sports Awards approach, his nomination stands as a recognition not only of athletic achievements but also of the enduring spirit that makes a hero out of a coach, a fighter, and a beacon of hope for all.
