Michelle Alozie

In the vibrant tapestry of Houston’s sports community, Michelle Alozie emerges as a shining star, not only for her prowess on the pitch but for her profound impact beyond the field’s boundaries. As a nominee for the esteemed Community Impact Award at the upcoming Houston Sports Awards, Alozie’s journey reflects a narrative of resilience, passion, and a relentless commitment to making a difference.

In a recent conversation with KPRC 2 Sports Director Randy McIlvoy, Alozie’s story unfolded, transcending sports achievements to reveal a deep connection to Houston. Her swift rise in the National Women’s Soccer League found its roots in a dream, and when the Houston Dash provided the opportunity in 2022, she embraced the Bayou City as her new home with unwavering determination.

Beyond soccer, Alozie’s love for Houston extends to her work as a cancer research technician at Texas Children’s Hospital, where she focuses on acute myeloid leukemia, a cause close to her heart. A graduate of Yale University with a degree in molecular biology, Alozie seamlessly balances her career in soccer with a commitment to medical research, striving to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer.

The nomination for the Community Impact Award is not just recognition for her on-field prowess but a heartfelt acknowledgment of her tireless efforts to bring hope and positive change to the Houston community. As the Houston Sports Awards draw near, all eyes will be on Alozie—a Dynamo not only in her athletic achievements but also in her impactful contributions to the community.

Peggy Turner

Peggy Turner, a formidable force in the realm of adaptive sports, stands as a nominee for the prestigious Community Impact Award at the Houston Sports Awards. Currently serving as the adapted sports coordinator at TIRR Memorial Hermann, Turner has devoted an astounding 41-year career to championing inclusivity in athletics.

Her remarkable journey began with the establishment of Houston’s first adapted sports program, a groundbreaking initiative that set the stage for her national involvement with both US Olympic and Paralympic athletes. TIRR Memorial Hermann Adapted Sports and Recreation, under Turner’s guidance, has become a beacon of opportunity, offering youth and adults with physical disabilities a diverse range of sports programs.

From wheelchair basketball and rugby to powerlifting and tennis, Turner’s dedication has created a thriving community where individuals can engage in sports both competitively and recreationally, transcending limitations and fostering a culture of inclusivity. Houston Astros player Jeremy Peña has demonstrated his commitment to giving back to the community in a meaningful way. In 2023, Peña initiated the Pena’s Pals program, showcasing his dedication to uplifting and inspiring the younger generation. This heartwarming initiative invited kids from the Houston area who displayed exceptional work ethic in the classroom to attend Friday home games.

The fortunate winners not only had the opportunity to witness the excitement of Astros games but also enjoyed the unique experience of spending quality time with Peña after intense practice sessions. To add a personal touch, Peña engaged the young participants in a special activity—decorating the cleats he wore during the game that night, creating a memorable connection between the athlete and his Pals.

Beyond the baseball diamond, Jeremy Peña’s impact resonates in the hearts of these young fans, making him a deserving nominee for the Community Impact Award as he continues to make a positive difference in the lives of those he touches.
