ATASCOCITA, Texas – The Atascocita Eagles are getting ready for the state track meet, coming off a regional title.
They have as good of a chance as possible to start off state with a bang, due to the first event being the 4x100 relay. Back in March, Atascocita’s 4x100 team set a national record at Rice, with a blazing 38.92 time. They broke a record that dated back to 1998 by nearly a full second.
“That’s the first event and it’ll set the tone,” head track coach Elton Ervin said. “Our guys are locked in. This team has some seniors, and these guys are locked in and taking advantage of their last meet.”
The 4x100 relay team is made up of three seniors—Jelani Watkins (LSU football & track commit), Jordan Parker (TCU track commit), Landon Fontenot (Iowa track commit), and junior Tory Blaylock (Oklahoma football commit).
“We have a lot more where that comes from,” Blaylock said. “We’ve been putting in overtime, extra work.”
Atascocita won the 100-meter, 200-meter, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay at their regional meet. The school has never won a state track title, and they are hoping to finally bring one home.
“That would be history,” Ervin said.
