HOUSTON – Astros right-handed starting pitcher Jose Urquidy is expected to miss the rest of the 2024 season, and is expected to require surgery on his right arm, three sources with knowledge of the situation told KPRC 2 Sports.
In March, a league source told KPRC 2 some of what Urquidy is experiencing can be described as “stiffness in the forearm.”

Urquidy was slated to be one of the main cogs of an Astros starting rotation that had been hit hard by injuries. Of the eight experienced starting pitchers on the team’s roster heading into the season, four of them—Justin Verlander, J.P France, Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr.—had some sort of injury heading into spring training.
Verlander is now healthy, and starts Monday, vs. St. Louis. Garcia recently threw a live bullpen, and is trending toward a rehab assignment in a few weeks. Lance McCullers, Jr. is throwing off a mound, with his next step being a live bullpen. France is not yet throwing, after shoulder issues in early May.
Cristian Javier is also dealing with an injury, and is on the IL with right forearm discomfort, and is still weighing options on how to handle the injury, two sources with knowledge of the situation tell KPRC 2 Sports.
The Astros are 26-34, and start a home series against the St. Louis Cardinals Monday night.
