Astros’ Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman named American League Co-Players of the Week

Second time in franchise history for the Astros to have two players win Co-Players of the Week

HOUSTON – Major League Baseball announced Monday that Houston Astros LF Yordan Alvarez and 3B Alex Bregman have been named the American League Co-Players of the Week for the week of Aug. 5-12.

This is second time in franchise history for the Astros have to two players win Co-Players of the Week, with the other time coming for the week ending on Sept. 11, 2000 (OF Richard Hidalgo and IF Julio Lugo).

For the week, Bregman batted .444 (12x27) with three doubles, three home runs, three walks, six RBI and a 1.389 OPS in six games. This is Bregman’s third career weekly award with the last coming in 2022 for the week of April 10th.

Alvarez batted .429 (9x21) with one double, five home runs, eight RBI, seven walks, and a 1.777 OPS in six games last week. Alvarez recorded his 19th career multi-homer game on Saturday at Boston. This is also Alvarez’s third career weekly award with the last one coming in 2022 for the week of September 18th.

The last team to have two co-players of the week in the same week was the St. Louis Cardinals for the week of August 22, 2022, with IF Paul Goldschmidt and IF Albert Pujols winning the award.

Alvarez and Bregman also become the first Astros players to win AL Player of the Week since RHP Ronel Blanco did so in April of this year.
