HOUSTON – The Houston Astros are calling up infielder Shay Whitcomb to the big leagues, two sources tell KPRC 2 Sports.
Whitcomb is the #14 ranked prospect in the Astros system, according to MLB Pipeline. A middle infielder by trade, Whitcomb has played all over the infield in Triple-A, including several games at 1st base in recent days. Whitcomb is known for his power bat, hitting a minor league-leading 35 home runs across two levels in 2023. Whitcomb has 25 home runs in Triple-A in 2024, with an improved strikeout rate and OPS.

Whitcomb led Minor League Baseball with 35 Home Runs in 2023.

Whitcomb is hitting .293 with an OPS of .908 this season in Sugar Land. His 91 runs batted in is a Space Cowboys record. Whitcomb has drastically cut his strikeout rate in 2024, with 95 strikeouts to 53 walks this season. In 2023, Whitcomb struck out 178 times while walking 42 times in Double-A and Triple-A.
The Astros drafted Whitcomb in the 5th round in 2020, out of UC San Diego.
