HOUSTON – The Texans are scheduled to interview Commanders assistant head coach-offensive passing game coordinator Brian Johnson on Friday, according to league sources.
Johnson, 37, worked closely with Commanders star rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels this season and assisted head coach Dan Quinn with scheduling and administrative duties in his role as assistant head coach as the franchise advanced to the NFC championship game.

Daniels, selected second overall, led a resurgent Commanders team to the playoffs as he went 12-5 as a starter and passed for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions and rushed for 891 yards and six scores. His completion percentage was 69 percent and he set an NFL rookie record with 12 touchdown passes in the fourth quarter or overtime for the season and was selected to the Pro Bowl. He set an NFL rookie record with a 91.3 completion percentage against the Cincinnati Bengals.
A Baytown, Texas native and Robert E. Lee graduate, Johnson has offensive coordinator experience, including one year as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator before being dismissed and hired by Washington.

With the Eagles, the offense ranked seventh in scoring offense and eighth in total offense, 16th in passing offense and eighth in rushing offense. The team finished 11-6 and quarterback Jalen Hurts passed for 3,858 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions as he rushed for 605 yards and 15 touchdowns. Running back D’Andre Swift rushed for 1,049 yards and five scores and wide receivers A.J. Brown (106 catches, 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns) and DeVonta Smith (81 catches, 1,066 yards and seven touchdowns) both had productive seasons.
He was previously the offensive coordinator for the University of Florida under coach Dan Mullen and the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of Houston and was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah, his alma mater.
Johnson was also a quarterbacks coach at Mississippi State.
Johnson was the winningest quarterback in Utah school history, going 26-7 as a starter. He passed for 7,838 career yards, 57 touchdowns and 27 interceptions, rushing for 848 yards and a dozen touchdowns.
At Utah, Johnson wasa named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
He went undrafted and participated in a Green Bay Packers rookie minicamp, later playing briefly in the United Football League with the New York Sentinels.
In high school, Johnson passed for 2,900 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior and rushed for 540 yards and 12 touchdowns and was named district Most Valuable Player. He was recruited by Illinois and Louisiana Tech before signing with Utah.
