HOUSTON – A championship ring is not your ordinary piece of jewelry.
It is often oversized and packed with diamonds and precious gems.
Each World Series ring is specially designed and what the Astros wear will be no different.
The maker of the rings is not predetermined. In fact, now that the Astros have officially clinched the championship, the bidding process will begin.
One of only a few possible companies, Diamond Cutters International, is right here in Houston.
It began creating its concepts during the American League Championship Series and owner-founder Fred Cuellar shared them with KPRC’s Chip Brewster.
Option 1
The Astros’ baseball cap has a blue background, an orange star and a popping H.
To get this design for a ring, Cuellar would take an 8-carat cabochon sapphire and use a laser to cut a grid into that sapphire, into which he would fit the star.
The H on top of that would be made up of several diamonds, also known as interlocking diamonds, cut to perfectly fit the design.
Option 2
It's similar to option one but the sapphire has been replaced by a tight-knit pave diamond background.
To get this design for a ring, Cuellar would remove the 8-carat cabochon sapphire used in the first option.
"Everything else remains the same but just a lot more bling, a lot more diamonds,” said Cuellar.
Option 3
This design introduces an entirely new element. Cuellar said he was inspired by where the team actually won the championship – the baseball diamond.
All four bases are made from actual diamonds and the baselines from naturally orange diamonds, to match the team colors.
Option 4
It's the most expensive design Cuellar and his company have come up with.
The bases would be small sapphires and the background would be a tight-knit pave diamond setting.
These are the designs Cuellar plans to present to the Astros, with some possible tweaking. If his company gets the contract, the final design could still change, depending on what the team and/or the players want.
