The deadly incident has resulted in several federal and state criminal indictments of HPD officers from that night, including murder charges for former narcotics officer Gerald Goines.

When the mother returned home, a neighbor performed CPR on the boy before he was taken to the hospital. We don’t know if it’s foul play and I don’t want to speculate on it but very sadly a three-year-old is dead,” Finner said. “We got a three-year-old dead and anybody that knows me, Chief Acevedo and our entire department, we take it very seriously and very personally,” Finner said. Police have several people of interest that were detained but Finner said investigators still need more information.

Police said the incident happened at around 12:30 a.m. when a man was hassling an officer during a traffic stop on Cullen near South Loop East and was told to go away. After the officer detained two people and began doing a search of their vehicle, police said the suspect ran back to the scene, approached the officer from behind and hit him in the head with a bar. The officer pulled his weapon and shot the suspect once, police said. Chief Acevedo said the Houston Police Department is still working to identify the suspect, who is not cooperating with police.
