Schools across the Houston area have been dealing with a number of threats this month.

An Alief Independent School District high school was placed in lockdown after reports of a student in possession of a kitchen knife, according to the district.

Alief Independent School District will add 20 electric buses to their 310-bus fleet after being awarded nearly $8 million in grant money from the Environmental Protection Agency.

“It’s not mismanagement by schools,” Alief ISD Deputy Superintendent Charles Woods explained. “We’re all in the same boat that the general public is; we’ve got high inflation, high costs, we have hurricanes coming through, we have all the things we’ve always had, and then we have had six years, three legislative sessions without additional funding just for the basic costs of education.”

HOUSTON – Busted pipes from winter weather are not just impacting homes, but school districts across Southeast Texas. Maintenance crews in many of those districts are working overtime to access the damage and begin the cleanup process. Cy-Fair, Galveston, Goose Creek, Klein and Fort Bend ISD’s are all dealing with similar situations. Fort Bend ISD hopes to resume normal operations on Monday but that decision won’t be made until Sunday night. AdFort Bend ISD hopes to have a better assessment of the damage tomorrow.

Humble ISDHumble ISD plans to resume school on Monday, Feb. 22, for all students, both on-campus and virtual students. District staff is in the process of reaching out to families to connect them with supports and information available through the Act. Royal ISDRoyal ISD students will resume school Tuesday.

HOUSTON – The Texas State Teachers Association announced Monday that its members had reported hundreds of COVID-19 protocol discrepancies or violations in the first couple weeks of the school year. In the Houston area, the most complaints of violations were submitted by teachers in the Cy-Fair Independent School District with 210 reports of violations since the school district began the academic year last week. Clear Creek ISD -- The Clear Creek Independent School District is issuing an early release for all staff and students at noon Tuesday. Conroe ISD - Classes closed Friday due to power outages. Harmony Public Schools -- Closed Wednesday and Thursday. La Porte ISD -- La Porte Independent School District will be closed Tuesday so that staff members may prepare for Hurricane Laura. Montgomery ISD -- Montgomery ISD Schools closed Friday.

HOUSTON – School is back in session today for Alief ISD Thursday morning. Things will look different this year for students and educators because instruction is 100% virtual for the time being. One was held at Alief Taylor High School and another is slated for Thursday at 8 a.m. at Elsik High School. Principal Mary Williams said although things will look different they are excited to get the school year started. “The first day of school is always my favorite day of school and this is just a little bit different,” said Williams.

HOUSTON – Alief Independent School District community members got a chance to ask Superintendent HD Chambers questions in an exclusive Zoom conversation Wednesday night, ahead of the first day of school Thursday. Some high school students take classes where they have labs and need to have access to school facilities. But the number of hours teachers are expected to teach in virtual learning is based on the content they are teaching. There’s nothing that a school district can put in place that will resolve that issue 100% until students come back to school. Question: How will college counselors help high school students virtually?

HOUSTON – Two Houston-area school districts handed out school supplies, laptops and hotspots to students in need Wednesday ahead of the start of the 2020-21 school year. Alief ISDThe Alief Independent School District will be the first Houston-area school district to begin its new school year with online learning Thursday. Aldine ISDWith school around the corner, parents in the Aldine School Independent School District got some much-needed help Wednesday. Several volunteers and organizations teamed up to give away free food boxes and school supplies to families in need. Around 4,000 cars wrapped around the school waiting to get the supplies and a box of food from Baker Ripley.

The question: How does virtual learning work? The answer: The virtual learning experience may be different depending on which district your child is enrolled in. While districts consent in-person learning is the most effective learning environment, the spike of coronavirus in the Greater Houston area has many districts opting to begin the 2020-2021 school year with virtual learning. For example, Katy Independent School District is offering in-person learning and a virtual program, the Katy Virtual Academy. However, some districts, like Houston and Alief ISDs, are only offering virtual learning to start the fall.

Houston ISD will re-open on Sept. 8 and offer online learning for six weeks. How does that plan compare to other area districts and some of the larger ones across Texas? Area districtsThe majority of area school districts will start school between Aug. 17 and Aug. 24. Goose Creek ISD is the only other school district so far with a start date of Sept. 8 and students there will begin the year virtually for three weeks. Alief ISD, the first school district in the area to announce they will be starting the year virtually, will be the earliest to start off the 2020-2021 school year on Aug. 6.

Virtual instructionThe student would receive 100% online instruction through Alief ISD Learns at Home or Alief Virtual School (Powered by Pearson). Alief Learns option is available to all Alief ISD students in English and Spanish. Key Differences in Alief Learns and Alief Virtual SchoolAlief Learns courses are through Schoology. Students who would like a full-time virtual learning environment for the duration of the 2020-2021 school year can use Alief Virtual School instead. The decision to place the student into Alief Learns versus the Alief Virtual School will be determined by both the parent/guardian and the school administration.

Parents raised many concerns, including STARR testing being put back on the calendar for the upcoming school year. Katy Independent School District officials are working on a safety plan that will give parents the option of both online or in-person instruction. The district plans to finalize its plans within the next few weeks. STARR testing to resumeWhile school officials attempt to get students and teachers back safely, parents are not happy with the STARR testings back on the schedule. KPRC 2 reached out to the TEA Commissioner to see if districts would be given any more time or if state officials will consider moving STARR testing.

Alief Independent School District Superintendent HD Chambers says school officials have decided to begin the school year online. Chambers said he doesn’t want any student to lose out on their education because of the pandemic but the thought of how to bring students and teachers back to the classroom safely keeps him up at night. What resources and support will the school district give parents? Right now Alief school officials are working hard to figure out how to bring back students in the safest way possible. The school district sent out a survey to parents back in June.

HOUSTON – At least three people that attended Alief Independent School District graduations tested positive for coronavirus, the district confirmed Friday. One Hastings High School graduate and his guest, who attended the ceremony, tested positive Wednesday. The following day, a staff member, who worked the Taylor High School graduation ceremony, also tested positive for COVID-19. Alief ISD said they have notified all high school parents and staff members. If a staff member tests positive for COVID, the district’s policy is that the employee quarantine for 14 days and may return to work once a negative test result is presented.

It’s the official wrap-up of the Cool Schools season, and we thought it would be appropriate to highlight all the fun ways area school districts bid farewell to their graduates. Though we’ve picked single schools in the past, it’s time to highlight many of the unique ways students got a send-off. Cy-Fair Independent School DistrictChoir directors of Cy-Fair ISD shared a special song for the class of 2020. Santa Fe ISD hosted a drive-thru event in which graduating seniors were able to pick up a cap and gown. Needville High School of Needville ISD surprised their top 10 students to congratulate them on their class rankings.

HOUSTON – Alief ISD is working hard to keep students on track, even while they are at home. Any students who are having a hard time with slow internet, or may not have good access to a computer received work packets to help them get their school work done. Many have also had to deal with no access to technology or slow internet. Teachers and school officials helped make the packets over Spring Break. Teachers will continue to work with parents on email and online tutorial videos, and phone calls now that “virtual schooling” has officially begun.

HOUSTON – Alief Hastings High School administrators, teachers and students organized a crawfish boil fundraiser Saturday afternoon for a beloved student in need. “The community has all come out,” said Lynette Miller, a teacher and the organizer of the fundraiser. Velasquez is lucky to be alive after being hit by a cafeteria worker, who investigators said was driving recklessly and hit the student. “It’s been a tough journey no doubt. “In Alief, Hastings...we’re all together and whatever happens, it affects all of us,” said student Kimberly Hernandez.
